Communication Theory Paper: Framing Christopher R. O’Hanlon Penn State University Abstract: Framing is extremely important in the media and in public relations because it has such an impact on many issues. This communication theory basically states that â€Å"gatekeepers† of media and journalists can control the frame in which news is reported and distributed. For framing to be properly instituted, the message has to be easily understood by the consumer. Public relations specialist frame almost everything they produce to make their client look favorable in the public eye. The simple definition of framing is the media deciding what people think about. Framing is a communication theory that simply put, is the media or people in general deciding what other people think about. The framing theory is similar to the agenda-setting theory, but it focuses more at the particular issues and not a specific topic. When the media puts certain heightened attention on one event or topic over another and places theses topics in our field of view it is almost like they are deciding what the public should think and that is the foundation of this theory. When journalists and editors do their job, everyday they are personifying the use of the framing theory. There are important decisions that they must make, such as, whom to interview for certain stories, what writing style, the specific word choice, and what questions are asked.
